Telefónica Adds in Latin America But Europe Drags
The total number of accesses served by Telefónica reached 309 million as of the end of March, up 7% over the year earlier thanks to growth in Latin America.
Revenues totalled 15,511 million euros in the first quarter of 2012, a 0.5% year-on-year increase (-1.8% in the previous quarter), driven by higher sales at Telefónica Latinoamérica (+8.3% year-on-year), which more than offset lower revenues at the European businesses (-6.6% year-on-year). Excluding the negative impact of mobile termination rates cuts, revenues rose by 1.6% from the first quarter of 2011.
OIBDA totalled 5,081 million euros, down 8.8% compared to last year, while operating income was 2,511 million euros. Meanwhile, consolidated net profit for the quarter stood at 748 million euros and was impacted primarily by Telco’s writedown.
“Our earnings for the first three months of 2012 reflect the strategic priorities set for the full year and the success of the company's shift in commercial strategy, which began in the second half of 2011," said Telefónica Chairman César Alierta. “These results are in line with internal estimates and thus allow us to reiterate our financial and operational guidance announced for 2012."
Some highlights from the quarterly report:
- The company is seeking to implement a new approach to handsets subsidies, reducing its upfront costs
- The company is moving from voice to data-centric tariffs
- Smartphones represent 81% of new commercial activity in Europe in Q1
- There were 2x mobile net adds in Latin America vs. Q1 11.
- The company describes Latin America as its "engine for growth".
- There was a similar revenue contribution from Brazil (23%) and Spain (25%).
- CapEx(ex-spectrum)/sales was 11% in Q1, up 1% over the same period last year. CapEx totalled 1,712 million euros in the quarter, up 10.3% year-on-year. The Company continued to devote the bulk of its investments to growth and transformation projects (81% of total CapEx),fostering the expansion of broadband services, both fixed and mobile.
- The company blamed commercial and regulatory costs for its drop in OIBDA.
- Telefónica’s mobile accesses growth in Latin America accelerated to 13% year-on-year in the first quarter
boosting the accesses base to 170.8 million users.
- Telefónica’s fixed accesses in Latin America rose by 2% year-on-year to 34.6 million accesses. The Company’s retail broadband accesses climbed by 12% year-on-year to reach 8.0 million and net additions of pay TV customers totalled 2.3 million, up 23% year-on-year. 75% of fixed accesses now include some bundled offer package (+7 percentage points year-onyear), while 89% of broadband accesses are subscribed to a double or triple-play offer.

ADVA Tests OpenFlow for Multi-Layer Network Virtualization
ADVA Optical Networking is pioneering the use of OpenFlow technology to dynamically control wavelength-switched optical networks. Working in cooperation with the University of Essex as part of the OFELIA project, ADVA has developed an optical OpenFlow implementation based on its FSP 3000 transmission platform.
Project OFELIA provides researchers with a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) testbed to experiment with new applications using a web-services approach. The aim is to use a common OpenFlow control for both the packet and optical layers.
The SDN facility at University of Essex comprises packet switches and application servers that can be dynamically connected by optical lightpaths. External users can directly access the facility via GÉANT, a high-bandwidth pan-European backbone that interconnects national research and education networks. Web-based tools and services enable users to request network resources from OFELIA and run, control and monitor their own SDN applications.
"SDN presents a tremendous opportunity for customers to streamline and automate network infrastructure and operations,” said Christoph Glingener, CTO, ADVA Optical Networking. “While server and storage virtualization have been widely adopted, network virtualization is still in its infancy. SDN closes this gap by offering programmable network control, better scalability and faster adoption to virtual machine mobility. We have proven that SDN can seamlessly extend into the optical domain and enables network virtualization across multiple layers. The OpenFlow approach extends our existing SDN solution employing our RAYcontrol control plane."
"It has been exciting developing this OpenFlow solution with the team at ADVA Optical Networking”, commented Professor Dimitra Simeonidou, head of the High Performance Networks Group, University of Essex. “Together we have built an SDN testbed with packet and wavelength switches under a common OpenFlow control. This is something that has never been done before. Researchers can now obtain slices of network infrastructure to program their own virtual multi-layer networks. They can use optical switching alongside packet switching to adapt bandwidth, latency and power consumption to their application needs." ...

Nokia Siemens Networks to Resell Ruckus Wireless' Wi-Fi
Nokia Siemens Networks has signed a global reseller agreement covering Ruckus Wireless' carrier-class Smart Wi-Fi systems, including indoor and outdoor access points and controllers. NSN will also deliver the Ruckus SmartCell Gateway 200, which allows operators to transparently accommodate mobile subscriber devices using trusted Wi-Fi access without requiring any client software. The SCG 200 seamlessly integrates Wi-Fi traffic into operator packet core networks through standard industry interfaces, providing a variety of offloading options.
Nokia Siemens Networks' own Smart WLAN Connectivity solution seamlessly integrates Wi-Fi with mobile broadband networks. Nokia Siemens Networks said it plans to embrace Wi-Fi in additional ways, such as integrating Wi-Fi from several partners through its Smart WLAN Connectivity solution, and providing small cell concepts, including its Flexi Zone solution, with built in Wi-Fi access.
“Operators simply cannot inject capacity into their networks fast enough to address the mountains of data hitting their mobile networks,” said Selina Lo, president and chief executive officer of Ruckus Wireless. “As a result, operators are looking to new solutions that combine carrier-class Wi-Fi with small cell technology that complement their macro environments and can be seamlessly integrated within their existing and future core infrastructures. By working with Nokia Siemens Networks, we can help operators relieve these pressures while scaling to support future mobile broadband services.”

CTIA: NSN Launches Picocell Base Stations and 3G Femto APs
Nokia Siemens Networks introduced a line of microcell, picocell and Femto access points.
Specifically, the Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Lite Base Station range has been extended with versions offering increased power of 10 watts + 10 watts for more deployment options, for example in rural locations. This range of all-in-one compact base stations can cut operator site costs by up to 90%** and enable sites that were previously impractical to be used.
Also announced are new 3G Femto access points, introduced to the North American market for residential and enterprise use. These small cell base stations offer seamless 3G access and link back to the operator’s network via the user’s existing broadband connection such as DSL or cable. Using standard network interfaces, the 3G Femto access points are easy to integrate with existing core and radio networks and feature automatic plug-and-play configuration to support rapid and cost-effective mass-market roll outs.
Nokia Siemens Networks has also launched a trial of its Flexi Zone architecture in the Chicago area. The Hot Zone trial system comprises clusters of multiradio (LTE, HSPA and Wi-Fi) access points that complement the macro-cellular network to deliver the highest capacity in Hot Zone areas. The trial system aims to showcase the innovation in a real-life environment by significantly boosting performance while lowering costs compared to traditional architectures. The trial features a new standalone, multi-technology, picocell. Using this feature, operators can initiate Hot Zone deployments with a single site, moving to a full pico cluster as traffic increases.
The Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Zone suite is a 3G/LTE/Wi-Fi-capable cellular solution engineered to offload traffic from the macro network to an underlay network at a street and indoor level, both for individual subscribers and enterprises.
Flexi Zone creates a zone covered by a cluster of low-power access points connected to a local controller. ...

CTIA: Ericsson Debuts LTE-enabled Business Gateway, VZ Wireless Certifies
Ericsson introduced an LTE-enabled business gateway offering a fully-integrated wireless PBX communication system supporting voice, data, security, network resiliency and Wi-Fi from a single device.
The new Ericsson Converged Workspace (ECW) has been certified for use on the Verizon 4G LTE network.
Ericsson said the new product category functions as an "office in a box" for enterprise and small/medium business customers, enabling the rapid deployment of voice and data services in work locations that are temporary, hard to reach, need to have a standardized connection or updated infrastructure. A new office work location gains immediate access to simultaneous voice calling services over the mobile network or VoIP, full multi-user Internet access, LAN, Wi-Fi and routing services and full PBX functionality.
The LTE connection can be used as either the primary network or as a backup network. The ECW can also be configured to integrate traditional POTS lines and WAN access via DSL or cable, providing even more flexibility to operators and their small business customers.
The ECW is the result of collaboration begun as part of Verizon’s Innovation Program, of which Ericsson is a founding participant. ...

Ixia to Acquire Anue for Network Monitoring Switch
Ixia agreed to acquire Anue Systems, which offers a network monitoring solutions, for $145 million in cash.
Anue Systems offers a Net Tool Optimizer that provides traffic visibility for Service Providers and enterprises by enabling test tools to access taps across the network. Anue aggregates and filters network traffic to optimize network monitoring tool usage. Anue also can replicate network traffic from a single tap or SPAN port and send it to multiple monitoring tools simultaneously. The company was founded in 2002 and is based in Austin, Texas.
Ixia said the acquisition extends its scope in the realm of real time network monitoring and traffic visibility.
Anue grew revenues 51 percent in 2011 to $40.5 million and generated gross margins of 83 percent for the year. For the 12 months ended March 31, 2012, Anue generated $47.6 million in revenues.
Ixia expects this transaction to be accretive to non-GAAP earnings beginning in the third quarter of 2012. Non-GAAP earnings exclude stock-based compensation, amortization of acquired intangible assets, and other non-recurring charges, net of the applicable tax effects.
“Many networking trends such as the deployment of cloud and virtualization, LTE and mobility driven growth, security implications of applications delivered over cloud infrastructures, and the massive expansion in bandwidth are fueling both Ixia’s and Anue's growth,” said Vic Alston, Ixia chief operating officer. “Next-generation cloud providers, mobility operators and enterprises all require network and traffic visibility to maintain quality of service across application and service delivery. Anue's Optimizer solutions provide customers with a measurable value regarding performance, scale, and resiliency of networks, while enabling the creation of a next generation platform for quality of service delivery across live networks.”

| Coherent Technologies – Taking DWDM into the Terabit Age by Geoff Bennett Since its commercial introduction in the mid-90s, DWDM has continually responded to the demands of internet growth. In addition to scaling the number of wavelengths supported on a fiber, the data rate of each individual wavelength has grown from less than one gigabit per second, to the current level of 100Gb/s. Each step in this evolution was triggered by a specific technology advance. The leap from 2.5Gb/s to 10Gb/s, for example, was fundamentally enabled by a better understand and control of chromatic dispersion. 10Gb/s then remained the transmission sweetspot for around a decade until the advent of coherent technologies. This next quantum leap in optical transmission consists of advanced modulation, polarization multiplexing, coherent detection and advanced digital signal processing. In this article we discuss the way that these technologies work together to take DWDM into the Terabit Age. | |
| Staying Ahead of the Curve for Network Data Inspection by Dr. Hongwen Zhang Securing networks at the packet level with such standard inspection technologies as packet filtering and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) is limited in its efficiency and cannot scale to provide safe usage of the more advanced Internet. | |
| Tailoring 100G for Metro Networks by Stephan Rettenberger 100G is in rapid fashion making its way across more and more of the network, as enterprises and carriers seek an extended break from bandwidth exhaustion and traffic bottlenecks. As the state-of-the-art technology has reached the metro, it has quickly spawned a more diverse landscape of solutions from which to choose. | |
| The "Flattening Effect" and Network Intelligence by Terence Martin Breslin, CEO, and Andy Huckridge, Director of Marketing Because the network has simultaneously become both flatter and more complex, the journey toward a converged all-IP network comes with an entirely new set of network performance and management philosophies to be adopted and developed by IT organizations. To drive the need for maintaining and managing the experience of the subscriber, real-time monitoring, troubleshooting and provisioning of the network must be implemented strategically and methodically. Real-time monitoring of network traffic has proven to be crucial to diagnosing and analyzing network performance and services, and consequently the subscriber’s quality of experience (QoE). | |
| Focus on a Premium Mobile User Experience by Ray Greenan What is left for the service provider to differentiate themselves from their competition? It is the user experience. Since the playing field has been leveled for mobile devices, the most important thing carriers can do is focus on the user experience to create loyalty and drive revenue. Security is a big part of this picture. | |
| Service Delivery Networking: The key to 4G Network Success by Ray Vinson Applications and devices require quality network service architectures in order to deliver the QoE that subscribers demand. This article looks at the framework of Service Delivery Networks. | |
| What Operators Still Need in Next-Generation Transport by Jimmy Mizrahi What do operators still need in next generation transport? This article will provide an in-depth look at what operators still need for next generation transport, and Packet Optical Transport Systems (P-OTS) in particular. P-OTS, thought well intentioned, has its weaknesses – and its early promises fell short of its expectations. We will discuss and focus on each of the challenges that exist in early P-OTS implementations by operators. Based on an assessment of these unique challenges, operators and vendors alike are gaining a better picture of what they really need, so that the full benefits of P-OTS can be realized | | |

"Sales of high-performance mobile broadband developed well in North America, Japan and Korea, while other regions such as Europe including Russia, parts of Middle East and India were weaker. CDMA continued its expected decline in the transition to LTE. Our services business showed continued momentum where especially Professional Services developed favorably. Support Solutions (former Multimedia) increased organic sales." Hans Vestberg, President and CEO of Ericsson 25-Apr-12 more quotes |
