Amazon, Corning Sign Multibillion-Dollar Deal

June 8, 2026
in Optical
A A

Amazon will invest billions of dollars in a new long-term agreement with Corning Incorporated to supply optical fiber, cable, and connectivity solutions for Amazon’s growing U.S. data center infrastructure. The deal will support the expansion of Corning’s manufacturing operations in North Carolina, create 1,000 advanced manufacturing jobs, and generate hundreds of construction positions tied to facility expansion.

The agreement comes as hyperscale cloud providers accelerate investments in AI infrastructure, driving unprecedented demand for fiber-rich data center architectures. Corning will manufacture optical fiber and connectivity products used throughout Amazon’s data center network infrastructure. The companies will also launch a workforce development initiative with Catawba Valley Community College, expanding Corning’s Fiber Optic Technician Training Program to prepare workers for careers in fiber manufacturing, fusion splicing, and related technical fields.

The announcement builds on Amazon’s broader investment strategy in North Carolina. The company previously committed $10 billion to expand cloud infrastructure in the state and says it has invested more than $20 billion in North Carolina since 2010, supporting more than 26,000 jobs. Corning CEO Wendell Weeks said the agreement will expand domestic production capacity while strengthening the U.S. manufacturing base for critical digital infrastructure components.

• Multibillion-dollar, multiyear supply agreement between Amazon and Corning
• 1,000 new advanced manufacturing jobs planned across Corning facilities in North Carolina
• Hundreds of additional construction jobs tied to manufacturing expansion
• Expanded Fiber Optic Technician Training Program with Catawba Valley Community College
• Supports Amazon’s growing U.S. data center and AI infrastructure footprint
• Focused on domestic production of optical fiber, cable, and connectivity solutions
• Builds on Amazon’s previously announced $10 billion North Carolina cloud infrastructure investment

“Amazon’s investment will help us expand production, create 1,000 new advanced manufacturing jobs at our facilities, and lead the way toward building a resilient U.S. manufacturing base,” said Wendell Weeks, chairman, CEO, and president of Corning.

🌐 Analysis

The announcement arrives during a period of accelerating investment in U.S.-based fiber and connectivity manufacturing driven by AI infrastructure buildouts. Large AI clusters require significantly higher fiber density than traditional cloud deployments, increasing demand for optical connectivity both inside and between data centers. Amazon’s commitment provides Corning with long-term visibility into demand while helping Amazon secure a domestic supply chain for a critical infrastructure component.

The deal follows several major developments for Corning over the past year. The company has continued expanding its Optical Communications segment, which has benefited from strong demand from hyperscale cloud operators building AI data centers. Corning has repeatedly highlighted AI-driven data center connectivity as a key growth driver, particularly for fiber-rich architectures supporting high-performance networking fabrics. Earlier this year, Corning also announced additional manufacturing investments aimed at expanding U.S. production capacity for optical fiber and cable solutions serving broadband, enterprise, and data center markets.

For Amazon, the agreement reflects a broader trend among hyperscalers toward securing strategic supply chains for AI infrastructure. While GPUs and networking silicon attract most attention, large-scale AI facilities also require massive investments in fiber, structured cabling, power systems, and cooling infrastructure. The agreement suggests Amazon expects sustained growth in data center construction over the coming decade and views domestic optical manufacturing capacity as strategically important.
