AOI Lands $71M Follow-On Order for 800G Optics, Total Hits $124M in Weeks

Applied Optoelectronics (AOI) reported a new $71 million order for 800G single-mode data center transceivers from a major hyperscale customer, bringing total orders from that customer to $124 million since mid-March. The latest order more than doubles AOI’s existing backlog with this customer, signaling continued acceleration in demand for high-speed optical interconnects tied to AI infrastructure buildouts.

The company expects to begin shipments of both the initial $53 million order and the new follow-on order in the second quarter of 2026. AOI plans to complete delivery of the initial order in the third quarter, with the newly announced order scheduled for completion by year-end. In parallel, AOI confirmed it has already shipped 10,000 units of 800G single-mode transceivers to another hyperscale data center customer, indicating broader traction across multiple accounts.

The announcement highlights ongoing momentum for 800G optics as hyperscalers scale AI clusters and transition toward higher bandwidth interconnects. AOI positions its vertically integrated manufacturing model as a differentiator in meeting volume requirements and cost targets for next-generation data center deployments.

“This increased order for our 800G transceivers reflects both the customer’s confidence in AOI and the growing demand for 800G optics,” said Dr. Thompson Lin, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AOI. “Following product qualification, we expect to begin delivering both the initial order—totaling more than $53 million—and this additional order in the second quarter. We anticipate completing delivery of the initial order in the third quarter, with this new order by end of this year.”

🌐 Analysis

AOI’s rapid accumulation of $124 million in orders within weeks underscores the transition from early qualification to volume ramp for 800G optics in hyperscale environments. This aligns with broader industry shifts toward 200G/lane signaling and the need to support GPU cluster scale-out for AI workloads, where east-west traffic dominates.

Competition in 800G pluggables remains intense, with vendors such as Coherent, Lumentum, and InnoLight also targeting hyperscaler deployments. AOI’s vertically integrated approach—covering lasers, components, and modules—may offer cost and supply chain advantages, particularly as hyperscalers prioritize secure, high-volume supply amid tightening optical component availability.
