Lightera announced an expansion of its rollable ribbon fiber optic cable portfolio, targeting growing demand for higher-density optical infrastructure across broadband, metro, long-haul, enterprise, and data center networks. The company said adoption of rollable ribbon technology continues to increase as operators and hyperscale infrastructure providers look for ways to scale fiber counts while improving installation efficiency and reducing cable congestion.
Rollable ribbon fiber differs from traditional flat ribbon cable designs by allowing individual fiber ribbons to roll and flex within the cable structure instead of remaining rigidly stacked. This architecture enables significantly higher fiber density within a smaller cable diameter while preserving compatibility with mass fusion splicing techniques commonly used in large-scale fiber deployments. The design also improves cable flexibility, routing, and handling during installation, particularly in dense ducts, conduits, and data center pathways where space constraints are critical. Rollable ribbon systems have become increasingly important for AI infrastructure, cloud networking, fiber broadband expansion, and hyperscale data center interconnects that require extremely high fiber counts.
Lightera said its expanded portfolio includes both outside plant (OSP) and flame-rated indoor cable offerings. The company noted that its OSP rollable ribbon products are designed for durability in outdoor environments, while the indoor variants meet stringent safety requirements for enterprise and data center installations. Lightera said the broader product family supports deployments ranging from regional transport networks to hyperscale AI data center environments.
• Rollable ribbon architecture enables higher fiber density in smaller cable diameters
• Flexible ribbon structure improves routing and installation efficiency
• Technology maintains compatibility with mass fusion splicing systems
• Portfolio includes both outdoor-rated and flame-rated indoor cable products
• Target deployments include broadband, metro, long-haul, enterprise, and AI data center networks
“As network demands continue to accelerate, our customers are looking for solutions that maximize capacity without compromising performance or ease of deployment,” said Michel Gomez, OSP PLM at Lightera. “Our rollable ribbon technology is at the center of that evolution, and we are proud to see its continued growth across both OSP and indoor applications.”
🌐 Analysis: Rollable ribbon cable technology has become a key enabler for next-generation fiber infrastructure as AI workloads, cloud networking, and broadband expansion drive unprecedented increases in fiber counts. Compared with traditional flat ribbon designs, rollable ribbon architectures provide a more compact and flexible cable structure while still supporting high-speed mass fusion splicing. That combination helps operators accelerate deployment timelines and maximize conduit utilization without sacrificing operational efficiency.
🌐 The broader optical networking market continues shifting toward ultra-high-density cabling systems capable of supporting large-scale AI clusters and distributed cloud architectures. Fiber suppliers increasingly focus on reducing cable diameter, improving airflow in data centers, and simplifying fiber management as hyperscale operators scale infrastructure to support GPU-intensive AI environments and high-capacity optical transport systems.
