POTS / PSTN served from 1876. What ultimately replaced it?
POTS / PSTN analog voice carried as a continuous electrical signal over a copper loop to a circuit-switched exchange, which set up an end-to-end dedicated path for the duration of the call. Its job passed to VoIP — but the problem it solved, and the ideas it proved, live on in what replaced it. The standard rests here in the archive.
