From the Graveyard
You just read about Alcatel. One of the companies whose work it now carries:
Xylan built Enterprise LAN switching. What became of it?
Xylan brought Enterprise LAN switching to Networking. That work was distinctive enough to lead to its acquisition by Alcatel for US$2B. The standalone name now passes into the archive — but the team and technology continue inside Alcatel today. One of 430 names here whose work outlived the company.
From the Technology Graveyard
You just read about Ethernet. Here is what it replaced:
ARCNET served 1977–1990. What ultimately replaced it?
ARCNET a token-passing bus/star LAN where a token circulated by station address (not physical position), giving predictable performance over coax at 2.5 Mbit/s.
