AstraZeneca, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, selected BT to provide and manage its new global IP network. The multiservice IP network will connect 82 sites worldwide over BT’s MPLS backbone. BT will retain responsibility for operation, supervision, maintenance and helpdesk functions. Frame Relay served 1990–2010. What ultimately replaced it?
Frame Relay switched variable-length frames over pre-provisioned permanent virtual circuits, dropping X.25's per-hop error correction (links were now clean) and pushing recovery to the endpoints for far higher throughput. Its job passed to MPLS — but the problem it solved, and the ideas it proved, live on in what replaced it. The standard rests here in the archive.
