Coherent Corp. has introduced a high-performance embedded Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (eOTDR) packaged in a compact QSFP form factor, designed for advanced fiber network diagnostics and real-time fiber health monitoring. Featuring an industry-leading dynamic range of 30 dB, the QSFP eOTDR delivers accurate, repeatable measurements across spans of up to 150 km, providing detailed OTDR traces, absolute loss measurements, and reflection event analysis. Leveraging a CMIS-based interface for seamless integration into routers, the module allows network operators to efficiently deploy scalable fiber monitoring without additional infrastructure investments. The QSFP eOTDR supports real-time diagnostics and proactive maintenance through artificial intelligence and machine learning, optimizing performance for high-capacity data center interconnects and telecom networks. According to Dr. Sanjai Parthasarthi, Chief Marketing Officer at Coherent, integrating complex OTDR technology into a compact, pluggable module required significant innovation but now offers unparalleled flexibility and efficiency for network diagnostics.

• Coherent introduces QSFP pluggable eOTDR with 30 dB dynamic range.

• Provides fiber diagnostics and precise OTDR traces for up to 150 km spans.

• CMIS-based interface allows easy integration and plug-and-play deployment.

• Enables scalable fiber monitoring with minimal infrastructure changes.

• Real-time AI-driven diagnostics support predictive fiber maintenance.

“Integrating high-performance OTDR capabilities into a QSFP form factor addresses the critical need for real-time, scalable fiber monitoring,” noted Dr. Sanjai Parthasarthi of Coherent.

  • Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) is a key technology for fiber optic testing and diagnostics, enabling precise measurement of fiber characteristics such as attenuation, splice losses, and reflection events. OTDR modules send light pulses into optical fibers and analyze backscattered signals, providing crucial data for network troubleshooting, proactive monitoring, and predictive maintenance, thus enhancing overall network reliability.
