Ericsson Foresees Faster Deployment of 3G and HSDPA

Ericsson’s President and CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg said the mobile telecommunications industry has become an attractive market for bandwidth-intensive applications and content, speaking at the Ericsson Strategy & Technology Summit in Shanghai.

The global mobile telecommunications industry is close to achieving 2 billion subscribers, representing approximately 30% of the world’s population. Svanberg expects growing demand from this huge market for mobile content and the handset’s emerging role as a media channel. This will spur the rollout of 3G and HSDPA.

Also at the summit, Ericsson signed a research and development agreement with Shanghai Research Centre for Wireless Communications (SHRCWC), targeting future telecommunications technology
such as Super 3G and 4G.

Ericsson plans to invest US$1 billion in its operations in China over the next three years.
