Ericsson introduced its Compact Packet Core, a streamlined solution designed to accelerate communication service providers’ (CSPs) transition to cloud-native infrastructure for 4G and 5G networks. The system combines Ericsson’s cloud-native Packet Core Controller (PCC) and Packet Core Gateway (PCG) with its Cloud-Native Infrastructure Solution (CNIS), compacted into a single rack. With pre-defined configurations and automated migration procedures, the Compact Packet Core aims to simplify deployment, reduce complexity, and lower the hardware and energy footprint for CSPs.
The solution supports 4G, 5G Non-Standalone (NSA), and 5G Standalone (SA) networks while enabling lifecycle management with automated upgrades. Ericsson claims CSPs can reduce parameter adjustments by 80% and decrease energy and hardware demands by up to 30%, leveraging advancements in CPU efficiency. This system eliminates common migration hurdles, ensuring seamless integration while maintaining existing business logic. It also incorporates cutting-edge cloud-native features like In-Service Software Upgrades (ISSU) and Container-as-a-Service rolling upgrades (CaaS RU), providing CSPs with scalability and adaptability for future use cases.
Ericsson has over 120 commercial contracts for 5G Core or cloud-native solutions, including 55 live dual-mode 5G Core deployments. As the shift toward 5G SA accelerates, Compact Packet Core positions CSPs to meet increasing demand for advanced connectivity services. Monica Zethzon, Head of Solution Area Core Networks, stated, “This solution significantly simplifies modernization while unlocking the full potential of our world-class cloud-native software. We are proud to introduce the Ericsson Compact Packet Core for CSPs looking to accelerate their cloud-native journey and manage capacity growth.”
