Google launched its own public Domain Name System in an effort to make Web browsing faster and safer. The service, called “Google Public DNS”, is an alternative to company’s hosting their own DNS.
The Google Public DNS IP addresses are as follows: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/

NetBIOS / WINS name resolution served from 1987. What ultimately replaced it?
NetBIOS / WINS name resolution flat, broadcast-based name resolution for Windows networks; WINS added a central server to map NetBIOS names to IP addresses without broadcasts. Its job passed to DNS — but the problem it solved, and the ideas it proved, live on in what replaced it. The standard rests here in the archive.
