KT to Deploy Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme

KT to Boost Data Speeds with

KT plans to deploy Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) technology to meet rising customer demand for data transmission speeds exceeding 400GbE. In recent trials, KT achieved speeds of 1.2 Tbps on its long-distance route between Seoul and Busan and 1.6 Tbps on its medium-distance route between Seoul and Cheonan.

Ciena says the integration of WL6e technology will enable KT to increase data transmission speeds by 2.6 times for metropolitan data centers and double the speed of its nationwide backbone network. This upgrade aims to support the high-capacity, low-latency demands of AI-driven applications and next-generation routing data paths. Using Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite, KT will also enhance network automation to optimize multi-layer operations and accelerate service delivery.

KT plans to roll out the WL6e technology in the first half of 2025, reinforcing its commitment to Korea’s digital transformation. “The upgrade to KT’s network will provide the needed boost to support the upcoming acceleration of AI-driven network traffic and digital transformation in Korea,” said Henry Kim, Regional Managing Director for North Asia at Ciena.
