From the Technology Graveyard
You just read about MPLS. Here is what it replaced:
Frame Relay served 1990–2010. What ultimately replaced it?
Frame Relay switched variable-length frames over pre-provisioned permanent virtual circuits, dropping X.25's per-hop error correction (links were now clean) and pushing recovery to the endpoints for far higher throughput. Its job passed to MPLS — but the problem it solved, and the ideas it proved, live on in what replaced it. The standard rests here in the archive. One of 198 technologies here that opened a door and then held it for the next.
