From the Technology Graveyard
You just read about DSL. Here is what it replaced:
ISDN served 1986–2018. What ultimately replaced it?
ISDN digitized the local loop into 64 kbit/s B-channels for voice/data plus a 16 kbit/s D-channel for signaling (BRI = 2B+D), giving all-digital dial-up and faster call setup over ordinary copper. Its job passed to DSL — but the problem it solved, and the ideas it proved, live on in what replaced it. The standard rests here in the archive. One of 198 technologies here that opened a door and then held it for the next.
