UMass Memorial Health Care, the largest health care system serving central Massachusetts, awarded a seven-year, $9.6 million contract to Verizon to provide a managed SONET service that will allow medical specialists to collaborate in the diagnosis and care of patients throughout the region. PDH (T1/E1/DS3) time-division multiplexing that interleaved 24 (T1) or 30 (E1) 64 kbit/s voice channels into a frame, then stacked those into higher rates by bit-stuffing loosely synchronized streams.
