Broadcom announced today a strategic partnership with Ningbo Bird, a local supplier of cellular phone handsets in China. The deal encompasses the development of multimedia GSM/GPRS handsets for sales into China and abroad. The company recently began producing handsets based on the Broadcom GSM baseband processor and GPRS baseband processor. Broadcom’s Mobile Communications Business Unit (formerly Mobilink Telecom) and Ningbo Bird have been collaborating for some time. Broadcom recently established a new R&D facility in Shanghai, China, to support Ningbo Bird locally.
