Adtran Launches 50Gbps Tunable SFP for 5G Fronthaul

Adtran has introduced the AccessWave50, a full C-band tunable 50 Gbps SFP56 PAM4 DWDM pluggable transceiver, marking the industry’s first of its kind. Designed to meet the rising demands of 5G fronthaul and AI-driven edge applications, the new transceiver enables mobile network operators (MNOs) to double bandwidth capacity by replacing dual 25Gbps links with a single 50Gbps unit. With power consumption under 3W, the AccessWave50 targets energy efficiency and reduced operational complexity in mobile transport networks.

The module integrates smart tunable optics, zero-touch provisioning, and Adtran’s patented signal shaping and distance optimization technologies. These features support seamless auto-tuning and robust transmission up to 15 km (9.3 miles) over standard SMF28 fiber. The AccessWave50 is fully C-band tunable, simplifying inventory and deployment through automatic wavelength selection in line with MOPA (Multi-Operator PON Alliance) guidelines. It is also compatible with G.metro systems and supports 50 Gbps Ethernet and 50 Gbps eCPRI protocols, making it suitable for fronthaul in dense, temperature-variable outdoor deployments.

Adtran will demonstrate the AccessWave50 in a live setup at OFC 2025 in San Francisco, showcasing zero-touch integration and real-time performance. The transceiver expands upon the company’s earlier AccessWave25 product line by offering higher capacity with minimal power usage.
