Arelion, in collaboration with Ciena, conducted the world’s first live 1.6 terabits-per-second (Tbps) wavelength data transmission in a network field trial.

This achievement took place on Arelion’s 470 km route between Points-of-Presence (PoPs) in Ashburn, Virginia, and the Virginia Beach cable landing station. The trial, powered by Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e), significantly boosts capacity between these critical locations in Arelion’s North American network. .

Ciena’s WL6e technology, which incorporates advanced coherent digital signal processing (DSP), offers a 50% reduction in space and power per bit and a 15% increase in spectral efficiency compared to previous generations. This enables Arelion to provide multiple 400/800 Gbps services optimized through 1.6 Tbps line capacity. The trial also used Ciena’s 6500 Reconfigurable Line System (RLS) to simplify and automate network service provisioning and reconfiguration. The success of this trial underscores Arelion’s commitment to adopting open optical networking and next-generation coherent optic solutions to enhance performance, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

• 1.6 Tbps Transmission: Successfully completed on a 470 km route in a live network trial.

• WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e): Provides 50% reduction in space and power per bit and 15% higher spectral efficiency.

• 6500 Reconfigurable Line System (RLS): Used to simplify and automate network services.

• Technology Impact: Enhances high-speed Managed Optical Fiber Services and Wavelengths for providers and enterprises.

“This new benchmark reflects our ongoing investment in cutting-edge optical networking technologies that increase capacity and performance while reducing energy consumption to benefit our customers,” said Dariusz Solowiej, VP Network Technology & Customer Operations at Arelion.
