Biznet Upgrades BNCS-1 Subsea Net with Ciena across Indonesia

Biznet is expanding the capacity of its submarine and terrestrial network infrastructure across Indonesia with a new deployment of Ciena WaveLogic 5 Extreme coherent optical technology on its Biznet Nusantara Cable System-1 (BNCS-1). Announced in Jakarta, the upgrade supports 400G services on Biznet’s international link while strengthening connectivity between Java, Sumatra, and Bangka Islands.

The deployment uses Ciena’s 6500 optical platform powered by WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e), with design and deployment support from Terrabit Networks. Biznet is also implementing Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite to improve network planning, automation, and provisioning efficiency. In addition to increasing capacity on BNCS-1, the project improves the Batam–Singapore route, adding international gateway capacity and improving access to global cloud and digital services.

Biznet said the expansion builds on its long-standing collaboration with Ciena across multiple Indonesian islands including Java, Bali, Sumatra, Batam, Bangka, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Flores. The company says the investment is designed to support growing bandwidth demand, faster internet services, and more stable connectivity as Indonesia’s digital economy continues to scale.

“Indonesia is a key connectivity hub in Southeast Asia and demand for high-capacity, low-latency connectivity continues to grow exponentially in the AI era,” said Alex Wong, Regional Managing Director, ASEAN, Ciena. “By upgrading the BNCS-1 submarine fiber optic network, Biznet can deliver faster internet services, improve spectral efficiency, and support long-term growth.”

🌐 Analysis

Ciena continues to deepen its footprint in Southeast Asian subsea and regional optical transport infrastructure as demand rises for cloud, AI, and international data traffic. The Biznet deployment highlights how operators are upgrading existing submarine systems with higher-capacity coherent optics rather than relying solely on new cable builds. WaveLogic 5 Extreme has become central to many of these modernization projects because it enables 400G and higher transmission rates over existing fiber routes while improving spectral efficiency.

The announcement also follows last week’s coverage of the Matrix Cable System in Indonesia, where Ciena is playing a role in the broader optical transport architecture supporting that new subsea infrastructure. Taken together, BNCS-1 and Matrix show how Indonesia is rapidly expanding both new subsea capacity and the optical systems layered on top of it. For Ciena, the projects reinforce its position not only as a supplier of long-haul coherent optics, but increasingly as a strategic technology partner for regional submarine cable operators building the next generation of digital infrastructure across Southeast Asia.
