You just read about SIP. Here is what it replaced:
H.323 served from 1996. What ultimately replaced it?
H.323 an ITU umbrella of protocols for packet voice/video: gatekeepers handled admission and address resolution while H.245/RTP carried the media - comprehensive but heavyweight versus SIP. Its job passed to SIP — but the problem it solved, and the ideas it proved, live on in what replaced it. The standard rests here in the archive. One of 198 technologies here that opened a door and then held it for the next.
