Coherent Expands WaveShaper with 5 GHz-resolution Programmable Optical Filter

Coherent Corp. launched the WaveShaper 1000A Sharp, a programmable optical filter designed to deliver 5 GHz frequency resolution for advanced optical networking and photonics applications. The new model targets data center interconnect and long-haul transport environments where cascaded filtering from multiple ROADMs can narrow spectra and impact signal quality. By enabling steep, highly selective filter profiles in software, the WaveShaper 1000A Sharp allows engineers to emulate and optimize these effects during network design and validation.

The WaveShaper 1000A Sharp supports applications that demand precise spectral control, including microwave photonics, terahertz spectroscopy, and metrology, where selective line shaping of optical frequency combs is critical. Coherent positions the device as a way to reduce the need to cascade multiple ROADMs or wavelength selective switches during planning and test, streamlining evaluation of complex, meshed optical networks.

Available as a benchtop laboratory instrument, the WaveShaper 1000A Sharp integrates with Coherent’s WaveAnalyzer family of high-resolution optical spectrum analyzers. The product is orderable now, shipping immediately, and scheduled for demonstration at Photonics West.

  • 5 GHz programmable optical bandwidth resolution, roughly doubling prior filter granularity
  • Enables steep filter slopes to emulate cascaded ROADM effects in meshed networks
  • Supports DCI, long-haul transport, microwave photonics, terahertz spectroscopy, and metrology
  • Software-defined filter profiles reduce the need for multiple physical filtering elements
  • Benchtop form factor with interoperability across Coherent test instruments

“WaveShaper 1000A Sharp significantly enhances flexibility while reducing cost in the planning and design of meshed optical networks. By replacing the need to cascade multiple ROADMs or wavelength selective switches with a single programmable instrument, customers can rapidly evaluate complex filter effects by defining the desired response in software.”

🌐  Analysis

Fine-resolution programmable filtering aligns with growing interest in tighter spectral engineering as coherent optical systems push higher baud rates and more aggressive channel packing. Coherent continues to expand its optical test and instrumentation stack alongside broader industry efforts to improve predictability and performance in reconfigurable, high-capacity optical networks.
