Coherent Intros CW Lasers for 800G and 1.6T Optical Transceivers

Coherent Corp. (NYSE: COHR) introduced a new series of high-efficiency continuous wave (CW) distributed feedback (DFB) lasers, targeting the growing demand for advanced silicon photonics transceiver modules. These lasers, built on indium phosphide (InP) technology, are designed to operate in the O-band (1310 nm region) and are specifically engineered for use in 800G and 1.6T optical transceivers, which are essential for supporting the increasing bandwidth needs driven by AI-powered data centers.

The new Coherent CW InP lasers offer approximately 15% greater power efficiency compared to existing industry standards, addressing the critical need for lower power consumption in silicon photonics transceivers. The first 70 mW 1310 nm laser, capable of uncooled, non-hermetic operation up to 85°C, will be commercially available in September 2024. Coherent also plans to expand production capacity by 2026, with future releases including higher-power lasers for cooled operations and lasers for the CWDM grid.
