Comcast and T-Mobile USA are opening an outdoor Wi-Fi hotspot at Philadelphia’s historic Headhouse Square Plaza. The companies will offer free, public access for the first six months. The deployment is T-Mobile’s first outdoor hotspot.

Metricom Ricochet a mesh of pager-sized shoulder radios talking to pole-top microcell repeaters, delivering ~28-128 kbit/s wireless internet across a handful of cities. Its job passed to Wi-Fi — but the problem it solved, and the ideas it proved, live on in what replaced it. The standard rests here in the archive.
