Ericsson and Global Telecom Giants Launch Aduna for APIs

Aduna is the new name of the joint venture formed by Ericsson and major telecom operators to develop APIs. Anthony Bartolo has been named as Aduna’s Chief Executive Officer. Bartolo, a seasoned technology executive with over 30 years of experience in scaling global businesses, will lead the initiative aimed at accelerating the global adoption and innovation of standardized network APIs. Previously the COO at Vonage and a leader at Bandwidth and Avaya, Bartolo has a strong track record of driving growth and SaaS transformations, positioning him to spearhead Aduna’s global strategy effectively.

Aduna aims to simplify how developers access advanced network capabilities by offering a unified platform for common network APIs, enabling innovation across multiple industries. The venture brings together telecom giants including AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Verizon, Orange, and others, to provide developers seamless access to programmable network functions based on industry-wide CAMARA APIs. Aduna’s mission is to empower developers to create next-generation applications with consistent performance across global networks.

Bartolo will officially assume his role as CEO on January 20, 2025, with the closing of the venture expected later this year, pending regulatory approvals. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in redefining how global telecom networks support innovation and digital transformation.

  • In September 2024, a group of the world’s largest telecom operators, including América Móvil, AT&T, Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Reliance Jio, Singtel, Telefonica, Telstra, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Vodafone, have partnered with Ericsson to launch a new venture focused on combining and selling network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) globally. The venture aims to streamline access to advanced network capabilities, enabling developers to innovate more easily across different telecom networks. By providing common APIs to developers, the venture is expected to drive new applications that can work across any network, offering a significant boost to digital service innovation.

    Historically, the advanced features of mobile networks have been difficult for developers to access, largely due to the fragmented nature of telecom capabilities across multiple providers. This new venture will address that issue by offering a unified platform for APIs, making it simpler for developers to integrate and utilize network functionalities. Applications in areas such as fraud prevention, device status checking for streaming services, and many others are expected to emerge from this initiative.

    The new venture, backed by major telecom players and supported by partners such as Vonage and Google Cloud, will provide APIs to a wide array of developer ecosystems, including Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) providers, System Integrators (SIs), and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). The platform will build on the industry-wide CAMARA APIs and is designed to be open and non-discriminatory to foster maximum innovation. Regulatory approvals are expected by early 2025, with Ericsson holding 50% of the equity in the new company.
