Ericsson and Qualcomm validate 6G radio prototypes

Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies validated foundational 6G radio innovations in joint lab prototypes, marking an early step toward 3GPP Release 20 and commercial 6G systems. The companies aligned on key physical layer concepts and will showcase live demonstrations at MWC 2026 (March 2–5), including operation in new centimeter-wave spectrum bands.

The joint prototype includes a 400 MHz component carrier using 30 kHz subcarrier spacing, aligned with proposed 3GPP 6G Release 20 study items. The companies explored performance in the 6–8 GHz centimeter-wave (cmWave) range to evaluate coverage, device capabilities, and spectrum trade-offs for future 6G deployments. The demonstration also highlights enhanced uplink performance and support for devices with four transmit/receive antennas to improve cell-edge coverage.

Beyond radio innovations, Ericsson and Qualcomm are prototyping AI-native and AR use cases built on device–network collaborative compute. The companies are trialing these capabilities with leading operators, targeting optimized uplink coverage, resilient wide-area performance, and support for new device form factors. The work aims to support emerging multi-device, agentic AI experiences that demand persistent connectivity and higher uplink capacity.

🌐 Analysis: Ericsson and Qualcomm are positioning 6G development around uplink-intensive, AI-driven workloads rather than traditional downlink-centric mobile broadband. By aligning early on Release 20 study items and cmWave spectrum, the companies are influencing both the technical direction and timing of standardization, while reinforcing their long-standing modem-to-RAN ecosystem strategy as competitors accelerate parallel 6G research programs.
