Elisa Oyj, Finland’s market leader in telecom services, has launched 800Gbps Ethernet services using 800ZR coherent transceivers.
The deployment leverages Juniper Networks PTX Series Routers and JCO800 coherent optics to enhance the backbone network supporting Finland’s mobile and optical fiber infrastructure. The initial implementation in the Helsinki metropolitan area sets the stage for scalable, sustainable network growth to meet increasing data demands.
The deployment integrates Juniper’s Converged Optical Routing Architecture (CORA), which utilizes IP over DWDM (IPoDWDM) technology to simplify the transport of high-bandwidth IP traffic. Juniper’s PTX10002-36QDD Packet Transport Router combines the capabilities of gray and coherent optics in the same port form factor, offering flexibility to scale based on traffic demands. The router’s high-density configuration supports dense 100GbE, 400GbE, and 800GbE connections, enabling Elisa to maximize fiber utilization. Juniper’s JCO800 coherent pluggable optics transform IP traffic into DWDM-ready wavelengths, optimizing data transport over open line systems (OLS) or existing DWDM networks.
Juniper notes that this architecture eliminates the need for traditional intermediary network elements, streamlining deployments while reducing costs and complexity. By directly plugging coherent transceivers into router ports, Elisa minimizes the equipment required for IP-to-DWDM conversion. The 800ZR coherent transceivers deployed in Helsinki support higher output power (0dBm), crucial for long-reach applications and reducing signal loss over extended distances, ensuring reliable high-capacity transport.
Juniper’s PTX10002-36QDD router, the backbone of this deployment, is powered by the Express 5 ASIC, delivering unmatched performance, energy efficiency, and scalability. The router’s compact, energy-efficient design reduces power consumption and cooling requirements, directly lowering both operational costs and carbon footprint. This is crucial for Elisa’s commitment to sustainability, as the deployment minimizes the environmental impact of hardware deployment, maintenance, and disposal.

“Juniper is proud to serve Elisa Oyj with our innovative 800G coherent CORA solutions as they lead the way to a truly notable and exciting achievement, the world’s first 800Gbps coherent ZR service deployment. This milestone underscores our shared commitment to advance digital infrastructure throughout the world, while ensuring a robust, sustainable and future-proof network for Finland’s expanding data demands and exacting user expectations,” stated Steffen Gienger, Vice President, Service Provider, EMEA, Juniper Networks
- The 800ZR standard, developed by the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF), defines interoperable 800G coherent line interfaces for data center interconnect (DCI) applications. It specifies the Ethernet client mappings, frame format, forward-error correction (FEC), modulation, and optical characteristics needed for interoperable 800ZR implementations. This standardization ensures that deployments like Elisa’s can achieve high-capacity, long-distance data transport with reduced complexity and cost.
