HP Aims Project Moonshot for Super Density Server Racks

HP unveiled its “Project Moonshot” — an initiative to completely redesign server architecture to achieve new efficiencies in density, performance and energy usage. The effort leverages the newly unveiled Calxeda EnergyCore processors. Compared to today’s blade servers, the big aims of Project Moonshot call for:

  • 89% less energy
  • 94% less space
  • 63% less cost
  • 97% less complex.

Project Moonshot will pack as many as 288 servers into a 4U chassis, enabling thousands of servers per telco cabinet. The servers will leverage common power, cooling, storage and management.

HP will open a Discovery Lab in Houston in early 2012 to test which applications benefit most from the new density.
