Hyperscalers Release Open Standard for Automated Cloud-to-Cloud Networking

AWS and Google Cloud expanded their joint multicloud initiative by adding a streamlined provisioning workflow and an open interoperability specification designed to remove the historical complexity of cloud-to-cloud networking. The enhanced service lets customers establish private, high-speed connectivity between AWS and Google Cloud without managing physical circuits, routing protocols, or interconnect hardware. From the AWS Console or CLI, users now configure multicloud links in three steps: specify the target cloud provider, select the destination region, and choose the required bandwidth. AWS then delivers a single attachment representing network capacity across clouds, turning what once required weeks of coordination into an on-demand experience.

The collaboration combines AWS Interconnect – multicloud with Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect, abstracting all physical infrastructure and pre-scaling capacity so customers operate through cloud-native automation rather than traditional telecom workflows. The providers jointly manage redundancy, monitoring, and operational support. Quad-redundant facilities and routers enhance resiliency, while MACsec encryption secures links between AWS and Google Cloud edge routers. The partners also released a unified API and specification designed for broad industry adoption, giving other cloud and network providers a framework to integrate similar multicloud connectivity into their platforms.

Enterprises working across multiple clouds gain a standardized approach for hybrid data movement, AI workloads, and cross-cloud analytics. Salesforce, an early adopter, highlighted the ability to deploy private connectivity to Google Cloud with the same operational model as AWS-native resources by tapping pre-built capacity pools and familiar automation tools. With the new APIs now open for others to adopt, AWS and Google Cloud aim to catalyze a broader shift toward interoperable, cloud-native networking fabrics.
