KDDI Picks Samsung for vRAN in Japan

Samsung has been selected by KDDI to deploy its virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) solutions for Japan’s expanding 4G and 5G Open RAN network. Starting in 2025, Samsung will deliver its O-RAN compliant technology, supporting KDDI’s shift towards a disaggregated, software-driven network architecture. This partnership will enhance network performance, boost energy efficiency, and introduce advanced automation capabilities.

Samsung’s involvement will leverage its vRAN 3.0 solution, O-RAN radios, and CognitiV Network Operations Suite to streamline the deployment process. The collaboration will be further supported by key partners such as Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Intel, and Red Hat, ensuring a robust and efficient rollout. KDDI and Samsung have a history of working together on Open RAN projects, with previous deployments in Tokyo and Osaka solidifying their leadership in this field.

Samsung said its proven 5G capabilities, including its comprehensive solutions for chipsets, radios, and AI-driven automation, position it as a strong partner for KDDI’s Open RAN initiatives.
