Nokia and Verizon to Deploy Private 5G Across Thames Freeport

Nokia and Verizon Business have been selected to deliver private 5G networks across multiple industrial and manufacturing sites in the Thames Freeport region, one of the UK’s most active maritime logistics hubs. The project will bring Verizon Private 5G, with Nokia as sole hardware and software supplier, to key sites including DP World London Gateway, Port of Tilbury, and Ford Dagenham. The effort forms part of a multi-year plan to drive technological transformation and economic revitalization across the River Thames Estuary.

The new 5G networks will enable AI-driven data analytics, autonomous vehicle operations, real-time logistics orchestration, predictive maintenance, and advanced process automation. Nokia will provide its Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) and MX Industrial Edge (MXIE) solutions as the technology backbone for the project. The deployment will also support job creation, workforce training, R&D collaboration, and sustainable operations as Thames Freeport targets 5,000 new jobs by 2030.

DP World London Gateway, Port of Tilbury, and Ford Dagenham—each with deep logistics and manufacturing capabilities—will serve as anchor sites for the new networks. The initiative aims to position Thames Freeport as a European leader in industrial digitalization while enhancing community development and regional competitiveness.
