Nokia strengthens its role in powering some of the world’s largest Internet Exchanges (IXPs), including six of the top 10, with peak traffic nearing 45 Tbps. The Finnish telecommunications giant’s infrastructure solutions, which include IP, optical, and DDoS defense systems, are helping IXPs manage massive volumes of data with enhanced security and scalability. The growth of cloud services and the shift of AI models to regional clouds are pushing IXPs to handle more traffic while maintaining low latency. Nokia’s FP5 800GE technology and Ethernet Virtual Private Networks (EVPNs) are at the forefront of these deployments, helping exchanges across Europe and North America keep pace with future demands.
As the digital economy expands and bandwidth requirements soar, Nokia’s technology is supporting IXPs in maintaining high performance and energy efficiency. European IXPs, such as Germany’s DE-CIX and the Netherlands’ NL-ix, are already benefiting from reduced power consumption and improved traffic handling capabilities. Nokia’s work with IXPs like Telehouse NYIIX in the U.S. also shows the advantages of their EVPN solutions, enabling smarter traffic management and reduced operational complexity. The increasing threat of DDoS attacks has further driven adoption of Nokia’s integrated defense solutions, mitigating risks directly at the router level to avoid increased costs and latency.
Nokia’s portfolio aligns with the industry’s growing need for scalable, secure, and automated solutions. Partnerships with IXPs continue to expand, as seen with deployments in LINX, BIX, and France-IX. IXPs, which serve over 5,000 member organizations worldwide, are counting on Nokia’s technology to sustain growth and support future traffic surges as new network demands arise.
Key Points:
• Six of the world’s top 10 IXPs use Nokia infrastructure, with peak traffic nearing 45 Tbps.
• Nokia’s FP5 800GE technology boosts performance while cutting power consumption by over 87%.
• EVPN deployments simplify traffic management and increase resiliency for exchanges like NYIIX.
• Nokia’s AI-enhanced DDoS solutions are integrated directly into routers to mitigate attacks without latency or cost spikes.
• Nokia’s global IXP partnerships span Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia.
Vach Kompella, Senior Vice President and General Manager of IP Networks business at Nokia, said: “As the nerve centers of the Internet, the world’s largest IXPs are host to every type of traffic and customer, and in response they have reset expectations around networking innovation – driving the highest levels of uptime, reliability and security with Nokia solutions. We are proud to be the leading provider of networking infrastructure solutions for these critical organizations.”
