At the 2024 EU-TW 6G SNS Joint Workshop in Taipei, Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) joined with the EU 6G-SANDBOX project and various partners to present advancements in 6G network trials, including integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technologies. This collaboration, involving Taiwanese companies like LITEON and universities such as National Sun Yat-sen University, alongside EU partners including Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Málaga, aims to create the largest global 6G trial network, advancing AI-driven 3D sensing and human posture recognition for diverse applications.

ITRI’s RISFORCE team, including BenQ Materials, TMYTEK, and YTTEK, plans to validate four RIS solutions in real-world settings in Spain in February 2025. This trial, supported by Keysight, Nokia, and Telefónica, will test RIS technologies to further build the 6G ecosystem and enhance research collaboration between Taiwan and the EU. Since 2016, ITRI has been active in European R&D, working on projects that focus on smart manufacturing and disaster relief, and continues to deepen its 6G efforts based on openness, sustainability, and intelligence.

Using digital twin technology for large-scale 6G network simulations, ITRI aims to elevate intelligent network operations. ITRI’s focus on international collaboration intends to shape global 6G standards, enabling both regions to gain a strategic edge as commercialization of 6G approaches. “We invite partners worldwide to join us in creating a sustainable, innovative future for 6G,” said Dr. Chyou-Huey Chiou, Director General of Taiwan’s Department of Industrial Technology.
