Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications provider, has announced a collaboration with SpaceX’s Starlink to introduce Satellite-to-Mobile technology for its customers. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity across Australia, particularly in remote and regional areas beyond the reach of traditional mobile networks. The partnership will begin with testing and refining the capability to send and receive text messages directly via satellite, with plans for a commercial launch thereafter. Shailin Sehgal, Telstra’s Group Executive for Global Network and Technology, emphasized that this technology would support customers outside traditional mobile network coverage.
This collaboration is part of a broader trend among global telecom operators partnering with Starlink to expand coverage:
• T-Mobile (United States): In 2022, T-Mobile announced a partnership with SpaceX to provide satellite-to-cellular services across the U.S., aiming to eliminate dead zones by enabling text, voice, and data services via Starlink satellites.
• One NZ (New Zealand): Formerly Vodafone New Zealand, One NZ partnered with SpaceX’s Starlink in April 2023 to offer 100% mobile network coverage across New Zealand, with SMS text services expected to begin in 2024 and voice and data functionality in 2025.
• Optus (Australia): In July 2023, Optus announced a partnership with SpaceX to provide satellite-to-mobile services, aiming to cover 100% of Australia and enhance connectivity in remote areas.
• Rogers Communications (Canada): In April 2023, Rogers signed an agreement with SpaceX to utilize Starlink for satellite-to-phone services across Canada, enhancing connectivity in remote and underserved regions.
• KDDI (Japan): Japan’s major mobile provider, KDDI, announced a partnership with SpaceX to begin offering expanded connectivity for its rural mobile customers via 1,200 remote mobile towers.
• Salt (Switzerland): Salt has partnered with SpaceX to provide satellite-to-mobile services, aiming to enhance connectivity across Switzerland.
• Entel (Chile and Peru): Entel has entered into an agreement with SpaceX to provide satellite-to-mobile services, improving broadband coverage for its LTE customers in Chile and Peru, with services expected to commence by the end of 2024.
These partnerships highlight a significant shift towards integrating satellite technology with traditional mobile networks to provide seamless connectivity, especially in areas where conventional infrastructure is lacking.
