MPLS routers prepend a short label to each packet; downstream label-switched routers forward by label swap along pre-computed paths (LSPs) instead of per-hop IP lookups, enabling traffic engineering and VPNs. Its job passed to SD-WAN — but the problem it solved, and the ideas it proved, live on in what replaced it. The standard rests here in the archive.
