Vodafone Greece has connected Crete to the India-Europe-Xpress (IEX) subsea cable system, adding a new route for high-capacity, resilient data connectivity. Located in Tympaki, the new cable landing station on the island’s southern coast offers an alternative path, expanding Crete’s infrastructure beyond the traditional subsea cable concentrations in northern regions of the Mediterranean. This connection supports increased capacity for data transmission between Europe and India, strengthening Crete’s role in global data networks.
The nearly 10,000-kilometer IEX cable, part of a broader intercontinental initiative, links Mumbai to Europe and connects eastward to Singapore through the India-Asia-Xpress (IAX) system. Extending to key hubs like Oman, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, France, Italy, and Greece, the IEX system integrates the island of Crete into a wider network that supports regional connectivity, investment, and development. Additionally, the landing station in Crete will remain open for other projects and service providers, further enhancing its potential as a connectivity hub.
Vodafone’s investment in Crete continues a long history in subsea systems that began with its first telegraph cable in 1870. Today, Vodafone is one of the leading investors in global subsea cables, holding capacity on roughly 80 systems covering over 100 countries. This new connection in Crete complements the company’s ongoing work on the 2Africa project, which connects Africa, Asia, and Europe, and includes landings in key regions such as the UK, Portugal, and South Africa.
