AT&T, Ericsson, and 1Finity completed the first Open RAN data call using third-party radios at AT&T Labs, marking a milestone in advancing multi-vendor, programmable wireless networks. The trial validated interoperability between Ericsson’s RAN Processor 6672 baseband and 1Finity radios, demonstrating the potential for operators to deploy open interfaces in commercial-grade networks.

The achievement underscores growing momentum for Open RAN, which seeks to diversify vendor ecosystems, reduce lock-in, and increase innovation through open standards. By successfully integrating third-party radios with a major vendor’s baseband, the collaboration highlighted the viability of multi-vendor interoperability in live network environments.

AT&T said the trial advances its strategy of developing open and agile wireless networks. Ericsson emphasized its role in industrializing open RAN architectures, while 1Finity framed the milestone as validation of its radio expertise in enabling flexible deployments.

• Demonstrated interoperability and reliability of multivendor Open RAN

• Marks progress toward agile, programmable wireless networks

Rob Soni, VP of RAN Technology at AT&T, said: “This successful call is a testament to AT&T’s leadership in Open RAN innovation. Our collaboration with Ericsson and 1Finity as key RAN collaborators underscores the potential of Open RAN to enhance network flexibility, efficiency, and creativity.”
