Amazon will invest €33.7 billion to expand its data center footprint in Spain, marking the company’s largest technology commitment in the country and coinciding with its 15th anniversary of operations there. The announcement, made at MWC26 in Barcelona, increases Amazon’s previously disclosed €15.7 billion plan by an additional €18 billion, bringing the total planned investment in the AWS Europe (Spain) Region in Aragón to €33.7 billion (approximately $39.8 billion).
The company estimates the investment will contribute €31.7 billion to Spain’s GDP through 2035 and support an average of 29,900 full-time equivalent jobs annually across direct, indirect, and induced roles. Of these, about 6,700 jobs will stem directly from Amazon’s operations, including data center technicians, engineers, construction workers, and security personnel. The Aragón-based AWS region, launched in November 2022, serves enterprises and public institutions across Spain and Europe, supporting cloud migration and AI workloads for organizations including Telefónica, BBVA, Iberia, Indra, Iberdrola, Mapfre, Multiverse Computing, Idealista, Ibercaja, WiZink, Gobierno de Aragón, IE, Insud Pharma, Grupo Editorial Edelvives, Grupo San Jorge, Smadex, ONCE, and the Spanish Red Cross.
Amazon will also build new supply chain facilities in Aragón to support its European data center operations. These include a server manufacturing plant for assembly and testing, a fulfillment warehouse, and a dedicated AI and machine learning server manufacturing and repair facility aligned with its circular economy strategy. When fully operational, the facilities are expected to create approximately 1,800 jobs. In parallel, Amazon plans to invest €30 million in community programs across Spain through 2035, targeting education, sustainability, and local development initiatives.
