AT&T will provide embedded 5G connectivity for the upcoming Rivian R2 in the U.S. and Canada, extending a relationship that began in 2023 when AT&T became the primary connectivity provider for Rivian vehicles. The agreement positions AT&T’s wireless network as a key component of Rivian’s next-generation software-defined vehicle platform, supporting over-the-air updates, cloud-based services, infotainment applications, and AI-powered in-vehicle experiences.
The Rivian R2, expected to broaden Rivian’s addressable market with a lower-cost platform than its current R1 lineup, will rely on AT&T’s 5G network to deliver real-time connectivity and continuous software enhancements. The companies said the high-speed connection will enable faster deployment of vehicle software updates, improved navigation and streaming applications, and support for Rivian’s AI-powered assistant. The approach reflects the growing importance of telecommunications infrastructure as automakers increasingly treat vehicles as software platforms that evolve throughout their lifecycle.
AT&T currently connects millions of vehicles and fleet assets across North America and has expanded its role in the automotive sector beyond traditional telematics to support software-defined vehicle architectures. For Rivian, the continued relationship with AT&T provides a scalable connectivity platform as it prepares to launch the R2 and expand production volumes. The announcement underscores how 5G networks are becoming foundational infrastructure for connected vehicles, enabling automakers to deliver new features, diagnostics, and digital services long after vehicles leave the factory.
