Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched its first AWS Local Zone in Vietnam, extending cloud infrastructure into Hanoi to support low-latency applications, local data processing, and data residency requirements. The new facility enables organizations to run compute and storage workloads closer to end users while maintaining compatibility with AWS Regions through the same APIs, management tools, and operational framework.
The AWS Local Zone in Hanoi is designed to support latency-sensitive applications across sectors including financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, gaming, media, and government. AWS said the platform delivers single-digit millisecond latency and includes local storage capabilities through Amazon S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access (S3 One Zone-IA) and Amazon EBS Local Snapshots. The deployment also supports enterprise modernization initiatives such as VMware migrations and hybrid cloud architectures, while providing access to Amazon EC2 compute instances and AWS Direct Connect private networking services.
AWS said the Hanoi Local Zone joins its global network of Local Zones spanning more than 30 metropolitan areas worldwide. The company highlighted support for 143 security standards and compliance certifications and emphasized that customers can deploy workloads using the same pay-as-you-go pricing model available across AWS Regions. Early adopters include Vietnamese financial institutions such as VIB and VPBank, fintech company Trusting Social, and mobility platform Green SM.
“Vietnam is one of the most dynamic digital economies in Southeast Asia, and its builders are moving fast. The AWS Local Zone in Hanoi puts world-class compute and storage where it matters most: closer to their customers, making sure Vietnamese organizations have what they need to build, scale, and compete without compromise,” said Jeff Johnson, Managing Director, ASEAN, AWS.

• Accessible through public internet or AWS Direct Connect private connectivity
• Early users include VIB, VPBank, Trusting Social, and Green SM
• Part of AWS’s global Local Zone footprint spanning more than 30 metro areas
🌐 Analysis: AWS continues to expand its edge cloud strategy across Southeast Asia as governments increasingly emphasize data sovereignty, compliance, and localized digital infrastructure. Rather than building a full AWS Region, Local Zones allow AWS to place compute and storage resources closer to users while leveraging existing regional cloud infrastructure, reducing deployment costs and accelerating market entry.
🌐 Analysis: The launch also reflects growing competition among global cloud providers in Vietnam. Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, Alibaba Cloud, and regional providers are pursuing opportunities created by Vietnam’s rapidly expanding digital economy, AI adoption, fintech growth, and evolving data localization policies. AWS already operates CloudFront edge locations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and provides AWS Direct Connect services in the country, making the Hanoi Local Zone a logical next step in its infrastructure expansion
