IBM Acquires HRL Labs to Expand Silicon-Spin Quantum Research

IBM signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, a privately held research and development organization jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors, in a move that broadens IBM’s long-term quantum computing strategy beyond superconducting qubits. The acquisition adds HRL’s expertise in silicon-spin qubit engineering, quantum sensing, advanced materials, cryogenics, qubit packaging, and control electronics. Financial terms were not disclosed, and IBM expects the transaction to close by the end of the third quarter of 2026, subject to customary regulatory approvals.

The acquisition complements IBM’s existing superconducting qubit roadmap while adding another technology path based on silicon-spin qubits. IBM said both superconducting and spin-qubit technologies share common silicon fabrication techniques, potentially allowing advances across multiple quantum hardware approaches. HRL also contributes research in quantum sensing, quantum materials, advanced communications, electronics, manufacturing, and defense technologies developed over decades of work for commercial and U.S. government customers. Boeing and General Motors will continue collaborating with IBM on quantum applications and advanced technology development after the acquisition closes.

The transaction also aligns with IBM’s broader quantum manufacturing strategy. Earlier this year IBM announced plans to establish Anderon, a dedicated quantum wafer foundry intended to support multiple quantum computing modalities. IBM said HRL’s silicon-spin expertise could eventually complement Anderon by helping develop scalable manufacturing processes for spin-qubit devices. IBM continues to target delivery of its fault-tolerant Quantum Starling system by 2029, followed by its Blue Jay architecture in the mid-2030s.
