Altarea and Vantage Plan 400MW AI Data Center Campus Near Bordeaux

Altarea and Vantage Data Centers plan a 400MW AI and cloud data center campus near Bordeaux, marking one of the largest digital infrastructure developments in France. The project targets accelerating demand from hyperscale and AI customers and positions southwestern France as a new hub for large-scale compute capacity.

Altarea secured a 400MW grid connection with the French utility on land it owns near Bordeaux, enabling early site readiness and power availability. Vantage Data Centers will enter the French market through the partnership, expanding its EMEA footprint, where it currently operates across nine countries. The companies said the campus will support European and international hyperscale, cloud, and AI providers seeking high-density capacity.

Altarea brings real estate development and local permitting expertise, while Vantage contributes hyperscale campus design and operations experience. Vantage operates more than 40 campuses globally with approximately 9GW of power capacity. The partners aim to combine local execution with standardized hyperscale deployment models to accelerate time to market.

• 400MW secured power connection near Bordeaux

• Planned as one of the largest AI and cloud campuses in France

• Vantage’s first expansion into the French market

• Supports hyperscale, cloud, and AI workloads

• Combines Altarea’s land and development capabilities with Vantage’s global campus platform

David Howson, President of Vantage Data Centers, EMEA, said: “Entering France alongside Altarea positions us to deliver capacity at unrivaled speed and scale and demonstrates our dedication to develop next-generation, sustainable digital infrastructure in markets critical to our customers. By combining our global expertise with Altarea’s local insight, we are well positioned to meet the evolving requirements of these hyperscale and AI customers. We look forward to bolstering France’s digital infrastructure capabilities that will support the country’s European and international edge.”

🌐 Analysis: France has accelerated efforts to attract AI and cloud investment through initiatives such as Choose France, with national and regional authorities emphasizing power availability and streamlined permitting. A 400MW site places the Bordeaux campus among Europe’s larger announced AI-focused developments and reflects a broader shift toward secondary markets with available grid capacity.

Vantage continues to expand across EMEA amid rising demand for high-density AI workloads, while local developers such as Altarea move deeper into digital infrastructure as part of diversified real estate strategies. Similar large-scale projects across Europe increasingly hinge on early power procurement and grid coordination, which has become a gating factor for hyperscale expansion.
