AST SpaceMobile Unfolds First Five BlueBird Satellites

AST SpaceMobile announced the successful unfolding of its first five BlueBird commercial satellites, just six weeks after their launch. These satellites, now ready for commercial and government applications, mark a key milestone for the company’s ambition to build a space-based cellular broadband network directly accessible by standard smartphones. AST SpaceMobile plans to deliver nationwide coverage across the United States using over 5,600 cells on premium low-band spectrum, partnering with major operators like AT&T, Verizon, and Vodafone. The satellites’ phased array antennas, the largest deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO) for commercial use, are designed to eliminate connectivity gaps and provide direct smartphone access at broadband speeds without requiring specialized equipment.

The company holds over 3,450 patent and patent-pending claims, underscoring its commitment to advancing space-based mobile connectivity. AST SpaceMobile’s current BlueBird satellites will be followed by a next-generation series, promising a tenfold increase in capacity. The technology not only aims to enhance commercial services but also offers dual-use capabilities, providing secure, reliable connectivity for government missions. As AST SpaceMobile accelerates toward operational services, it aims to support a range of strategic needs, particularly in underserved areas, through its scalable satellite solutions.
