Cirion to Enable 1.6 Tbps Connectivity Across Latin America with Ciena

Cirion Technologies is preparing to upgrade its Latin American network with Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optical technology, enabling 1.6 Tbps single-carrier wavelength connectivity. The deployment will expand capacity across Cirion’s terrestrial and submarine infrastructure, improving performance for AI, cloud computing, and high-bandwidth applications. The company expects to be the first in the region to implement 1.6 Tbps wavelengths, enhancing interconnection between its 160+ data centers in over 60 cities.

As part of its broader infrastructure expansion, Cirion is upgrading the SAC East submarine cable between St. Croix and Brazil to support up to 1.2 Tbps per channel. Additionally, Cirion will light its SAC-2 submarine route within the Firmina subsea system, connecting the U.S., Brazil, and Argentina. Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme solution, 6500 optical platform, and RLS Submarine Line Terminating Equipment (SLTE) will support connectivity of up to 800 Gbps and 1.2 Tbps over segments spanning 10,975 km and 2,500 km, respectively.

• Cirion’s network expansion highlights:

• Deployment of Ciena’s WL6e for 1.6 Tbps wavelengths in metro DCI and backhaul networks

• Upgrade of SAC East submarine cable to support up to 1.2 Tbps per channel

• Expansion of SAC-2 submarine route, part of the Firmina subsea system

• Integration of Ciena’s 8110, 8112, and 8114 coherent aggregation routers

• Use of Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite and Liquid Spectrum analytics for optimized network performance

“Ciena’s solutions will enable us to cater to our customers’ evolving needs effectively and adapt seamlessly to the rapid adoption of cloud, AI demands, and other emerging technologies, while maximizing network efficiency and sustainability,” said Alejandro Girardotti, Senior Director of Product, Innovation, and Strategic Alliances at Cirion Technologies.
