Coherent Launches QSFP-DD 800G ZR/ZR+ Optics with >1000 km Reach

Coherent Corp. (NYSE: COHR) announced general availability of its 800G ZR/ZR+ transceiver in the QSFP-DD form factor. The module is designed for metro, regional, and data center interconnect applications, supporting IP-over-DWDM architectures without the need for standalone optical transport platforms.

The transceiver supports transmission distances over 500 km in 800G ZR mode and over 1000 km in ZR+ modes, with extended reach at lower data rates. It incorporates Coherent’s in-house IC-TROSA optical engine based on Indium Phosphide (InP) chip technology, delivering –7 dBm output for standard 800ZR applications and 0 dBm output for ROADM-based line systems. The module is intended to simplify deployment by eliminating the need for external EDFAs or tunable optical filters.

Key specifications:

• QSFP-DD pluggable form factor

• Supports 800G ZR transmission >500 km

• ZR+ modes with reach >1000 km and up to 2000 km at lower data rates

• IC-TROSA optical engine using InP chip technology

• Optical output: –7 dBm (OIF 800ZR), 0 dBm (ROADM systems)

• Designed for use in IP-over-DWDM applications

“The availability of our 800G ZR/ZR+ QSFP-DD module marks another step in addressing the evolving needs of optical networks,” said Dr. Beck Mason, Executive Vice President, Telecommunications at Coherent.

The new module builds on the company’s prior experience in 400G coherent optics, using similar manufacturing processes to streamline customer migration.
