Ericsson has deployed Automated Carrier Aggregation (CA) in over 50 of Telstra’s live 5G Advanced commercial sites in North Sydney, making Telstra the first operator to implement this automation capability in a live network environment. The rollout, which began in mid-May 2025, is part of a multi-year partnership aimed at transforming Telstra’s network architecture and advancing autonomous operations.

The new software feature dynamically selects the most effective combination of frequency carriers in real time, based on current network conditions. This automation eliminates the need for manual or semi-manual configurations that are typically static and susceptible to human error. Early results from the deployment indicate a 20% increase in active CA combinations, translating to higher peak speeds and more consistent performance for users.

The deployment is a core component of Telstra’s “Connected Future 30” strategy, which emphasizes automation and simplification of network operations. Ericsson views Automated Carrier Aggregation as a critical feature of its 5G Advanced portfolio, offering both improved customer experience and reduced operational overhead for mobile operators.

  • Telstra becomes first operator to launch Automated Carrier Aggregation on a live 5G commercial network
  • Over 50 sites upgraded across North Sydney since mid-May 2025
  • Feature automates real-time selection of optimal frequency carrier combinations
  • Delivers 20% increase in CA combinations and improved peak user speeds
  • Enhances speed, reliability, and operational efficiency
  • Part of Telstra’s broader strategy to evolve toward fully autonomous networks
  • Builds on four-year transformation partnership between Ericsson and Telstra

“We are proud to partner with Telstra to bring 5G Advanced innovations to life,” said Ludvig Landgren, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand. “Automated Carrier Aggregation showcases the strength of automation to simultaneously elevate user experiences and enhance operational efficiency.”

🌐 Why it Matters: With rising mobile data demand, network automation is becoming essential. Automated Carrier Aggregation represents a tangible step toward self-optimizing networks, helping operators scale capacity and improve performance without increasing complexity or cost. The deployment also underscores the long-standing partnership between Ericsson and Telstra, which has consistently delivered early access to next-generation mobile technologies in Australia. From the launch of 3G and 4G to early 5G rollouts, the two companies have worked closely to test and commercialize leading-edge solutions. With Automated Carrier Aggregation now live on Telstra’s 5G Advanced network, this collaboration reinforces their shared commitment to early innovation, streamlined operations, and delivering high-performance mobile experiences at national scale.
