Nokia secures royalty agreement with Hisense

Nokia signed a multi-year patent license agreement with Hisense covering the use of Nokia’s video technologies in Hisense televisions. The agreement brings all patent-related litigation between the two companies to an end across every jurisdiction where disputes had been active.

Under the terms of the deal, Hisense will pay royalties to Nokia for access to its video and multimedia intellectual property. This marks Nokia’s first patent license agreement with Hisense. Financial terms remain confidential, consistent with standard practice for bilateral licensing agreements.

The deal reinforces Nokia’s long-standing strategy of monetizing its research and development investments through technology licensing. Over the past 25 years, Nokia has built a portfolio of more than 5,000 inventions related to multimedia products and services, spanning video compression, content delivery, recommendation technologies, and hardware-related innovations.

  • Multi-year patent license covering Nokia video technologies used in televisions
  • Royalty payments from Hisense to Nokia under the agreement
  • All patent litigation between the companies resolved worldwide
  • First patent licensing agreement between Nokia and Hisense
  • Agreement terms remain confidential

“Nokia enables other companies to build on our innovation by licensing the use of our patented technologies, and we are delighted to have reached an agreement with Hisense which recognizes Nokia’s leadership in video and multimedia research and standardization,” said Susanna Martikainen, Chief Licensing Officer, Wireless Technologies at Nokia.

🌐 Analysis

The agreement fits into Nokia’s broader licensing momentum as the company continues to expand its patent monetization across consumer electronics, streaming, and connected-device markets. Similar resolutions across the industry highlight how video and multimedia IP has become a durable revenue stream as device makers seek certainty amid increasingly complex global patent landscapes.

Hisense is a global consumer electronics and home appliance manufacturer headquartered in Qingdao, China, with operations spanning televisions, displays, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, and commercial display systems. Founded in 1969, the company has grown into one of the world’s largest TV manufacturers by shipment volume, serving markets across Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Australia. Hisense operates through a mix of in-house brands and subsidiaries, including Toshiba TV in select regions, and maintains a vertically integrated model encompassing panel sourcing, product design, manufacturing, and global distribution. The company has invested heavily in display technologies such as ULED, Mini-LED, and laser TV systems, while also expanding its footprint in smart TV platforms, connected home ecosystems, and enterprise display solutions.
