NTT DoCoMo Joins ACCA Networks in Applying for Mobile WiMAX License in Japan

ACCA Wireless submitted its application to Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for a license to build 2.5 GHz mobile WiMAX network in Japan.

ACCA Wireless also announced that a number of companies have agreed to join the firm to support its business. On August 31, NTT DoCoMo agreed to take a 26% equity stake in the ACCA and to support network construction and related WiMAX technologies.

ACCA Wireless expects to increase its capitalization to 30 billion yen by the time a decision is made on the license application, with the goal of raising capitalization to 72 billion yen in the future. The company is actively seeking the participation of additional investors and business partners.

Additional equity partners (currently holding a cumulative 12% stake) include:

  • TOKYO BROADCASTING SYSTEM, which will developing programming for the network
  • MITSUI & CO., LTD.
  • Keihin Electric Express Railway Co., which will implement WiMAX along Japanese railways
  • KT, which is sharing expertise regarding its WiBro business in Korea
  • SAHI Net, which will help implement a Mobile Virtual Network Operator model
  • NEC BIGLOBE
  • So-net Entertainment Corporation
  • NIFTY Corporation
  • FreeBit Co., Ltd.
  • YRP Business Development Institute

Financial institutions, including JPMorgan Securities Japan Co.,
Ignite Group, and DCM, hold an additional 15% stake in ACCA.
