Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. unveiled a new strategic coalition with more than 40 global partners to accelerate 6G development and commercialization, targeting pre-commercial validation in 2028 and initial deployments from 2029. The initiative brings together mobile operators, hyperscalers, infrastructure vendors, device OEMs and automotive companies to align on standards, architecture and early system benchmarks. Qualcomm positioned the effort as a coordinated industry push to define 6G as an AI-native platform spanning devices, networks and cloud infrastructure.
Global partners supporting the coalition include Airtel, Amazon, Asus, BT Group, Cisco, Dell, e&, Ericsson, FPT Corporation, Fujitsu/1finity, Google, HP, HPE, HUMAIN, KDDI, KT, Lenovo, LG Electronics, LG Uplus, Meta, Microsoft, Motorola, NEC Corporation, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, Reliance Jio, Samsung Electronics, Sharp, Siemens, SK Telecom, Snap Inc., Stellantis, Swisscom, Tejas Networks, Telstra, TIM Group, T-Mobile, Viettel Group, VNG and YTL. Additional companies aligned with the effort include Alibaba, Aramco, Chery Automobile, China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Geely Auto, GWM, Honor, Hyundai, Leap Motor, Li Auto, Oppo, NIO, SAIC Motor, Vivo, Xiaomi and Xpeng. The coalition plans to support timely 6G standards development, early system validation, demonstrations of specification-compliant pre-commercial devices and networks in 2028, and establishment of a common benchmark for 6G readiness.
Qualcomm said 6G will build on three pillars: connectivity, wide-area sensing and high-performance compute. The architecture envisions intelligent radios with integrated sensing, virtualized and cloud RAN with energy-efficient compute, AI-based network autonomy, and distributed edge and centralized data centers to support new AI workloads. The companies will collaborate across devices, networks and cloud domains to enable new services ranging from context-aware data applications to low-altitude aerial and terrestrial traffic management and large-scale analytics. Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated, stated: “6G is more than the next step in wireless evolution. It is the foundation for an AI-native future that distributes intelligence across devices, the edge, and the cloud, and transforms network providers into AI-driven enterprises. Having led multiple generations of global wireless innovation, Qualcomm brings deep expertise and capabilities to the development and commercialization of 6G. As with every wireless transition, success will depend on strong and dedicated partnerships, shared purpose and joint innovation. This group of industry leaders is making a united commitment to invest and innovate to deliver on a common 6G vision, with the rollout from 2029 onwards.”
• Coalition spans operators, hyperscalers, OEMs, infrastructure vendors and automotive companies
• Focus areas: AI-native architecture, integrated sensing, virtualized/cloud RAN, distributed compute
• Pre-commercial spec-compliant devices and networks targeted for 2028
• Commercial rollout of interoperable 6G systems planned from 2029
• Emphasis on global standards alignment and common 6G readiness benchmarks
🌐 Analysis: Qualcomm’s coalition signals an effort to shape the 6G standards cycle early, particularly around AI-native RAN, integrated sensing and distributed compute—areas that extend beyond traditional radio access into cloud and edge infrastructure. The timeline aligns with early 3GPP 6G study phases and mirrors similar ecosystem-building moves by Ericsson, Nokia and major operators that are already conducting 6G trials focused on sensing, sub-THz spectrum and AI-driven network automation.
