Nokia Powers Regional 5G Expansion for Optus Australia

Nokia has been selected by Optus to expand and modernize its 5G network across regional Australia, leveraging the latest AirScale portfolio components, including Habrok Massive MIMO radios and Levante baseband solutions. The upgrade aims to deliver faster speeds and improved service reliability to underserved communities and businesses, aligning with Optus’s regional network strategy and last year’s RAN-sharing agreement with TPG Telecom.

The Habrok 32 radios, built on Nokia’s ReefShark System-on-Chip (SoC) architecture, deliver 33% more output power while reducing energy consumption. These radios support enhanced performance in RAN-sharing zones, ensuring better use of shared spectrum assets. Complementing the radios, the Levante AI-ready baseband cards offer improved capacity and scalability with half the energy consumption of previous generations. Optus will also deploy Nokia’s Ponente baseband control cards to manage growing traffic demands.

Nokia’s solution includes advanced features like “Extreme Deep Sleep” mode to cut power usage during low-traffic periods, without degrading network performance. This energy-efficient approach supports Optus’s sustainability goals while enhancing user experiences for streaming, social media, and enterprise applications in remote and rural communities
