AmpTank AG announced that its subsidiary Data Tank Nordic Oy has secured legally valid building permits and a binding grid connection agreement for a 200 MW AI-focused data center in Utajärvi, Finland. The project will provide immediate access to 200 MW of power and is expected to begin construction during the second half of 2026, positioning the facility for rapid deployment of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure.

The facility will incorporate battery energy storage systems designed to improve grid stability, support flexible load management, and enhance operational efficiency. AmpTank said the project serves as a foundational element of its broader strategy to develop more than 1 GW of data center capacity across Finland, the Nordic region, and South America. The company plans to combine large-scale compute infrastructure with renewable energy procurement and battery storage technologies to support long-term AI infrastructure growth.

In addition to the data center development, AmpTank plans to establish an office in Oulu focused on supporting AI startups and local technology development. The company said it intends to enter into power purchase agreements with new renewable energy projects to help expand clean energy generation while supporting future AI computing demand. AmpTank also plans to leverage its existing energy storage and trading operations in the Nordic region as part of a broader strategy that integrates compute infrastructure, battery systems, and energy market optimization.

• 200 MW AI-focused data center planned for Utajärvi, Finland.
• Building permits and grid connection agreement have been secured.
• Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
• Facility will include integrated battery energy storage systems.
• Project forms part of a plan to develop more than 1 GW of capacity.
• Expansion targets Finland, the Nordics, and South America.
• AmpTank plans to establish an AI startup support office in Oulu.
• Renewable energy PPAs are expected to support long-term operations.

“AmpTank is proud to be building infrastructure not only for AI, but also for local AI adoption and entrepreneurship in the communities where our data centers are built and operated. Our aim is to enable the next generation of AI application entrepreneurs to build and scale locally,” said Neal Kumar, Chairman of AmpTank AG.

🌐 Analysis

Finland continues to attract AI infrastructure investment due to a combination of available power capacity, a reliable grid, abundant renewable energy resources, and a cool climate that can reduce data center cooling requirements. The Nordic region has become increasingly attractive for hyperscale and AI deployments as operators seek locations capable of supporting large power requirements while meeting sustainability objectives.

The 200 MW scale of the Utajärvi project places it among the larger announced AI infrastructure developments in Europe. For context, a 200 MW facility could support tens of thousands of advanced AI accelerators depending on deployment architecture, power density, and cooling design. The inclusion of battery energy storage is also notable, reflecting a broader industry trend toward integrating energy storage with data center campuses to improve resiliency, support grid services, and manage increasingly dynamic AI power loads.

AmpTank’s ambition to exceed 1 GW of capacity highlights the growing convergence of energy infrastructure and AI infrastructure. Similar strategies are emerging globally as developers seek to combine compute capacity, renewable energy procurement, battery storage, and grid optimization into integrated platforms. The approach mirrors broader industry developments where power availability is increasingly becoming a primary constraint on AI data center growth.
